I ended 2018 with a full heart and a healthy mindset. I had achieved personal and professional goals and 2019 looked promising. Ten years of marriage and a kindergartener to celebrate. I was excited for the new year.
. 
And then my dad died. Suddenly.
. 
Everything changed. My heart. My mind. My life. It was all instantly different. Yet, so much of it remained the same I felt foolish when I didn’t ‘keep up’ but in some moments I literally didn’t know how. . 
Grief is funny like that. It blurs your world in a sneaky way...showing you a glimmer of what was or what could or should be. Holding you hostage to your emotions in a way that makes you feel out of control at times.
. 
I was looking forward to so many things this year, but I’ve had a hard time really enjoying them. I don’t know if it’s the grief or just how crazy busy this year has been, both personally and professionally, but we have plenty to celebrate. A promotion for my husband. My boy who has blossomed into a little chatter box. My big girl who is amazed with new learnings at school. Lots of family and friend time. A solid job that challenges me on the regular. All blessings. . 
But 2019 has been a hard year.
. 
I’m learning how to accept a reality I wasn’t prepared for. I’m doing my best to find the balance and space in my life for all the important things and to get rid of the crap. . 
Some days I’m treading water. Some days I’m winning the race. This is arguably the best stretch on the planet...both the 3-step version and the 4-step version. It works on the flexibility of your glutes, hamstrings, hip flexors, shoulders, chest and thoracic spine. Fantastic for poor posture or when you’re really sore. I highly recommend that you do this daily!!! .

Last week I started speed work and my coach got mad at me. He told me that i needed my foundation/base first and to rein in speed/tempo for 3-4 months. That means I don’t get to race quite yet for PR times. .

What was your favorite race? Probably the ones with negative splits? The ones with the conservative starts? That’s because you harnessed your speed and built your foundation at the beginning of the race. Your body and glycogen stores thanked you I’m sure. .
.
I remember my piano professor saying the same thing about music. The notes and rhythm at a slow tempo is the foundation (like a house). Then comes the walls which are the louds and softs. The LAST add on is the roof of SPEED! Keeping those recovery runs and long runs at a recovery/slower pace. I’m dying not trying to push into the 6:00s and 7:00s but aiming to get that wisdom and control to avoid injury. .

One of my goals is to be more flexible, to stretch not just my body after every workout but to stretch my thinking, the way I do things because in the end life is constantly changing and if you don’t change guess what would happen to you? NOT MUCH. Being stuck in a place or situation you don’t want can easily be changed by BENDING, BEING FLEXIBLE and OPEN to doing things differently.

Monday.  Another week of work and workouts for some of us.  Are you looking forward to your workouts this week?  If not, what’s the issue?  Too tired?  Bored?  Lacking results from your efforts?  Unmotivated?  Don’t like to exercise (what!?! 😟)?

The reasons above are why some people hire our personal trainers/coaches.  They want the benefits of exercise but know they’re not going to be consistent on their own.  We’re happy to help. 🙌. But, if you’re dreading your workouts what’s the chance you’ll sustain them and make your current form of exercise a long-term habit?  Probably not good.  So, let’s take a look at why you’re doing these workouts in the first place...

Weight loss is a very popular goal we see.  What is that weight loss going to bring you?  Happiness?  Confidence?  What else might you be able to do (or accept) that can lead you to this goal without dreading the journey?
.
Some use exercise as stress relief.  If that’s so, then you probably don’t dread your workouts. 🙌 That would make no sense.  If your workouts bring you stress relief you’ve found a healthy type of exercise.  Congrats!
.
There’s all kinds of goals and benefits related to moving your body regularly, and there’s many different ways to move your body.  Find what motivates you and what FEELS good.  You don’t HAVE to do anything in particular usually.  No one really knows what’s best for you.  Do what you like and enjoy the journey.  You might find out that being less rigid with your workouts helps you be less rigid with life in general, including how hard you might be on yourself. 😧 #beflexible #beopen #dowhatsbestforyou .

It took me a VERY long time to understand this. I used to think that in order to succeed I had to be perfect. I had to follow exact steps to achieve a goal. I couldn’t stop to breathe or be because I might lose my way.
.
I’m not exactly sure where I learned that mindset. No one drilled perfection into me. While I knew my parents believed in hard work and instilled that in me, I never once feared they wouldn’t love me if I took a break.
.
Maybe it’s a societal thing, maybe it’s not, but regardless it’s a mindset that didn’t serve me well. Sure it helped me accomplish quite a bit, many achievements I’m very proud of, however the belief that things had to be this abstract concept of perfection is just ridiculous.
.
There is no perfect, Friends. Life is not perfect. Life is messy and beautiful, heartbreaking and amazing, and forever changing. The more we fight to organize the chaos into perfection, the more we miss out on all the adventures along the way.
.
So here I am continuing to show up for the adventure by honoring my own schedule and needs, while staying committed to a healthy lifestyle that makes room for that whole “life” thing. I love the living part and that includes moving my body to keep it strong.
.
Today’s Double Day workout was the perfect bookend to a weekend of relaxation, playing in the snow, and football fun.

I had been doing CrossFit for a few years when I moved to a place that had no fitness facilities beyond a high school weight room. (Still!) I continually felt frustrated that I was having to change so many parts of my workouts to fit the small space that I had to work with. Woe is me.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
By the time I had my son, school was back in session and the little space and time I did have was now gone. 
I quit working out for 6 months…
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I didn’t intentionally quit. I just felt so lost as to how to workout because the dang fitness box I had in my head was so small and uncreative, that I actually just stopped working out completely. This ended up being a blessing in disguise for two reasons.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1️⃣ My body had time to heal. 😳 I felt like my postpartum body had something to prove. That crushing workouts and “bouncing back” meant more than growing and carrying a human for 9 months. Had I had been able to stay in my little box of warped thoughts about my body and what workouts HAD to look like, I would be a different person today in many ways. Not to mention that my body was in no way ready for what I was going to expect of it after getting the “ok” at 6 weeks PP.
2️⃣ I was forced to become creative. 💁🏼‍♀️ I wanted to feel strong again so I started making up my own workouts. I got myself some dumbbells and put in work in the driveway. I modified the heck out of workouts to suit my needs. I stopped waiting for the stars to align and just focused on making movement happen. Thus, Abigail Jane Fit was born to create options for people through simplicity. That feeling of being lost is still so vivid to me, but also the feeling of freedom in finally stepping outside the box of rules and expectations, and being able create a new habit that fit my life better than ever.

I'm doing another #challenge, 30 yoga practices in 30 days. And I'm failing miserably.  I think I've only done 4 out of 13 so far 😅 Today, I didn't make it to a 105 minute hot yoga class like I had planned.  I taught English at 4am, and I will playsit til 9pm tonight, with just a 2hr break today. 
But as I sit here and do 30 minutes of stretching to count my #practice for @yogariotpdx , I realize its not my body I need to stretch, it's my mind.  I've been so stiff on my thinking of all I need to do, all I need to accomplish.  And I've been beating myself up about it.  And that's why I love #yoga. It's about #flowing. Its about #pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, but not about pushing yourself to your breaking point. It's about #acceptance of where you are. And this is where I am..on my floor, being gentle. 
Today I will be happy with what I have, with what I can do, and with who I am.

Steps for Headstand (Sirsasana): 1. Kneel on the floor. Interlock your fingers and place your forearms on the floor. Keep your elbows shoulder-width apart.

2. Rest the crown of your head against the clasped hands. Inhale; lift the knees off the floor.

3. Come into an upside-down “V” position. Walk your feets closer to your elbows, heels raised.

4. Slowly, uplift your feet off the floor and bring your knees closer to your chest.

5. Gently straighten your legs and keep them perpendicular to the ground.

This week I was reminded of two things. One is that sleep is very important to increasing this writer's productivity. Bad sleep=few words. Good sleep=many words. The second thing is the importance of being flexible.⁠

I had plans to write and write and write all week, sit back and watch the wordcount soar. But then I didn't sleep well, and the next day was a bust. And then I had a phone call that turned my attention in a different direction, to a different project. I still got a lot of work done this week, but very little of it had to do with my shiny new project. And, sure, a decent amount of words were added to the new manuscript this week despite all of that, words I can be proud of, but it was not as many as I planned and I'm trying not to feel guilty for not meeting my goals.⁠

It's hard not to feel like you have to do all the things all the time, work yourself ragged, hustle hustle hustle until you burn out. Other people seem to be able to do so much more than me, but then I know there are people who see what I'm doing and think, wow, that's a lot. And so another reminder this week: comparison is useless. Run your own race. Write your own book. Head down, do the work, even if it wasn't the work you'd planned on doing at the beginning of the week, it still counts, and you're doing great, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Also don't forget to get up from your desk and stretch sometimes. Take your dog for a walk. Enjoy the fresh air. Drink water. You're all winners in my book and I'll see you next week.⁠

Why does she have to schedule it, if she loves to do it? Because we are busy - if you don’t schedule your creative time - it may be weeks or months before you get to it.

We just got done emptying our #appletree!!🌳😃 We waited until the #coldestday before it frosts tonight because we like the extra #invigoratingchallenge! Lol😂🤣 It was fun to get everyone out there helping, even the #puppy!🐕😍 She loved zooming all over. And Vali couldn't help hanging upside down in the tree.🙉 I couldn't get my phone out fast enough!😄 This all happened after spending most of the day an hour away doing errands & helping Tom get his #firstcar officially titled!! Whoop!!Congratulations Tom!!!🚘🚗 This whole week has been one of many wonderful #unexpectedsurprises!! Monday Nick came for a visit & a sweet, #memoryfilled hike in our woods.💞 Wed, Bridge came & spent the night and we had a lovely time of visiting, breakfast, a gorgeous hike in the state park nearby, lunch & #chocolate!😋 The colors on the trees are really popping!!🍁🍂🍃 Thursday Tom got his car & I rearranged my day to join him in getting the plates & title yesterday.

We just got done emptying our #appletree!!🌳😃 We waited until the #coldestday before it frosts tonight because we like the extra #invigoratingchallenge! Lol😂🤣 It was fun to get everyone out there helping, even the #puppy!🐕😍 She loved zooming all over. And Vali couldn't help hanging upside down in the tree.🙉 I couldn't get my phone out fast enough!😄 This all happened after spending most of the day an hour away doing errands & helping Tom get his #firstcar officially titled!! Had plans to really kill it today, but my lower back had other ideas part way through...did Day 11 of my #fitnesschallenge , then my #abworkout . Did the Friday Fit Challenge, but only did #burpees for the first 2 sets, then just jogged in place for the last 3 sets because my back was bugging me. Suffered through the push-ups and planks - the rest weren’t bothered by my back. Sometimes you have to #adjust - you don’t necessarily need to quit. I didn’t end up doing one of my fat burn workouts as I had planned, but c’est la vie. I need all the flexibility for my workouts! 
Between mom life, teaching, and running my own biz from (which actually started cause I need a new plan for my workouts! 😉)
I needed flex in the way my workouts happen! Like all the flex. I use to spend at least and hour and half in the gym but honestly more like 2! And those workouts would go down 6 days a week! They were my escape! 
But then one kid, then two, then back to teaching, and all the life stuff.... the gym was happening less and less and well I was feeling it!
Now I stream my workouts so some days I hit the gym and some days i get it done at home! 
If I am being totally honest I loooooove the gym! So I workout there any chance I get, buuuuttt I love the way a finished Workout feels more the where the Workout happens...sooooo, I do what I gotta do to get it done. 
Basically I wanted/needed to removed alllllll  the excuses a busy life had built in for me!
Now I have this amazing one line fit crew and we workout at home, at the gym in a hotel room! Basically we workout where it works best for our lives and then we meet back in our virtual gym for high fives, mojo and good energy!! If you are ready to build more flex in your workout routine lemme know! Or if you are ready to just kick the excuses and get a routine started also lemme know! I love what I do and well me and my fit crew we have room for to for you!

Sometimes life is full of curves. We can’t predict them and sometimes they seem senseless, but like tracks in the road, they lead us to where we will eventually end up anyhow. Noticing the curve’s detail, the way it moves left and right, noticing the different perspectives the curve grants us ... these are likely better uses of our energy than being frustrated with the curve itself. Yesterday, on my 51st birthday, my mother had a heart attack and subsequent surgery. I’m in Europe and she’s in the northwest corner of the United States. I tried to lean into the curve I was in (and still am). Rather than resisting it, I tried to learn from it and be open to where it may lead. Curve ahead, people.

When things don’t go a certain way, or we don’t follow through with a specific intention or goal, oftentimes we talk ourselves into believing that we are not good enough. As a result, these negative thoughts drag us down and affect our personal lives, relationships, and careers.⁣

When you repeat them often, and tell yourself that you believe in them, they can help your mindset shift from negative thinking to more positive and optimistic thinking.⁣

Think about it, we workout consistently to improve our physical health, why wouldn’t repetitive mindset practices improve our mental health?⁣

For the rest of October, I challenge you to repeat 1-2 affirmations every morning, afternoon, and night (at least three times each). If you repeat these affirmations and really believe in them, your mindset will start to shift. ⁣
