Yoga. The very word draws up images of slender women twisting themselves into pretzels on a stunning beach backed by turquoise waters. But while this tropical image of contortions has been popularized by numerous travel agencies, the reality of yoga is much more down to earth. Yoga offers a wealth of health benefits for every practitioner of every shape, size, and background. It can easily be done in the comfort of your own home. And it is wholly, completely free.

What Is Yoga?
Yoga’s history traces back at least 5,000 years – and perhaps as long as 10,000 years or more – to the ancient civilizations in India. During all of those thousands of years yoga has been honed, refined, and perfected. Researchers have determined exactly which stretches and positions were beneficial for specific body parts.
Modern-day scientists have confirmed many of yoga’s ancient traditions. We now know just how well yoga helps to reduce blood pressure, enhance flexibility, improve sleep, ease depression, and benefit a hundred other health aspects of our bodies.

A Daily Yoga Practice
Yoga doesn’t have to be complicated, painful, or involve launching your feet up over your head in an acrobatic position. The best way to start yoga is to start simply and slowly.

🤸‍♀️ Forward Bend / Backward Bend
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Gently bend forward at the waist until your head hangs down toward the floor. There’s no need to push or stretch to reach any particular point. Let gravity do its job. Let your head hang loose. Let your arms dangle. Just relish in the stretch. Let the blood flow ease for hard-working vessels which normally have to fight gravity.
Breathe.
Now draw yourself up, up, up, to your tallest point. Let your body arch back, gently, softly, staying balanced. Look at the ceiling and, as much as you can, behind you. Be careful with your balance. Feel the stretch. Let your spine counter the direction it was just pulled in.

Imagine a crescent moon is floating before you. Its horns are pointing to the right. Setting your feet shoulder-width apart, tilt your hips to the left. Raise your arms up and arch them over to the right. You are the crescent moon. The curve doesn’t have to be deep. The aim is to introduce a sort curve into your spine. Let it float. Ease. Lift.
Breathe.
Now stand up tall again. Tilt your hips to the right. Arch your hands up and over to the left. You are the reverse crescent moon. You are rising, lifting, floating, and shining.

🤸‍♀️ Spinal Twist 
Your spine is best kept healthy when it moves through all three axes. You’ve just done forward-back and left curve / right curve. That still leaves the vertical twist. Stand with your feet hip-width apart. Lift high. Breathe in. Now let your arms fall loose at your sides. Imagine they are empty coat sleeves. Twist back to the left, to let those coat-sleeves flap in the wind. Now twist forward and right, as if you are an ice cream twist-cone, moving around that vertical pole of your spine. Your arm-sleeves will flap loose. Twist again left. You’re a May-pole with dancers celebrating the season. Twist right. You’re a fireman’s pole and someone is spinning their way down to safety.

❥ Ever got the feeling of “not being enough”? 🤷‍♀️
Me too. ⠀⠀
When we flip through magazines or scroll through social media, we see an endless parade of carefully airbrushed and curated photographs depicting lives that seem better than ours. These ads and images conspire to send us the same message: “You and your life are not enough. You need more to be happy.” When we’re inundated with this message, it’s pretty difficult to feel satisfied with our lives the way they are. It’s as if there’s always something else we need..
⠀⠀
As we’ve seen, modern culture encourages us to adopt a misguided approach to happiness. But it’s not just our culture that’s to blame. It’s the very act of looking for happiness in external sources of pleasure that’s bound to provide only limited, short-term “hits” of pleasure at best. When we seek happiness outside of ourselves, this becomes entrenched as a mental habit, setting us up for continual dissatisfaction. Trust me - I know how it feels. 😔 Even when we get what we want, our mind is so accustomed to looking outward that we keep scanning the world around us for something to latch onto as a source of happiness. We read another self-help book, listen to another podcast and watch the 100th YouTube video.. but still feel like we’re missing out and are determined to being “just not good enough”..

Does that sound familiar? 🤯

More and more I’m really valuing my “free” time. Connecting to family, friends and nature and leaving my devices safe where they belong: at home. 🏠 ⠀⠀
I believe that we can ALL stand on top of the mountain above the self-limiting, cloudy, destructive beliefs our ego keeps on shouting out in our head once we decide to chose what is truly important and not on what is fleeting and short-term in this ever changing fast pasted world. The only question is..

Are you ready to move beyond the ego and dive deep into the yet unknown, connect to your higher self and live your life on your terms and “rules”?
I will be in this with you. No matter where you are. Know that you are seen. You are loved. You ARE ENOUGH. Just accept this truth and enjoy the climb above the clouds.. ⛅️ ⠀⠀

Many people have bucket lists of things they’d like to do or see. Items on lists can become neglected or lost because people don’t have the focus or attention to see them through. Mindfulness provides that focus. It draws a person into staying with a task to make progress on it. It allows a person to minimize distractions. To become persistent. To see the list through until each item gets completed.

Doesn’t it make sense? 🧠 Mindfulness is about the mind. The practice helps the mind ease its jumping around and become more focused. Through mindfulness training and practice we nudge our brain into being more focused, having a better memory, releasing anxiety, easing OCD and addiction tendencies, and handling conflict better. ❥ Let’s talk about MEDITATION.🌿When was the last time you just..stopped? Put down your devices, ignored your notifications and just spent a moment being still? I actually did for the last couple of days..for what seems like forever. And, I’ll will definitely go back to it more regularly from now on. In today’s busy, noisy world of non-stop distractions, that’s a difficult task to do. Difficult, but not impossible. ⠀⠀
🧘‍♀️You’ve probably heard about the amazing effects of meditation, right? Such as improved concentration, relaxation and alertness, and it making us happier in general. I often get asked if you need to have a certain skill set or knowledge and the answer is: NO. (and that’s the amazing thing. All you need is yourself. And your breath. Some silence. And a comfortable seat of your choice.)
⠀⠀
🧘‍♀️Meditation might seem like something magical, but it’s really nothing more than a “mental workout” 🧠 🏋️‍♀️ Just as the many training machines at the gym are designed to exercise different muscles, so different types of meditation are designed to exercise different parts of your mind. The magic happens in your mind and the results will be similarly magical. ⠀⠀
🧘‍♀️The aim is to become more aware of unproductive self-talk – the negative, self-undermining stories we often tell ourselves about ourselves.
⠀⠀
🧘‍♀️A simple body-scan exercise can help you focus and relax:
Start by finding a comfortable position to sit in and spend two minutes breathing, with your eyes closed. 
Then go through each part of your body, one by one, really focusing on the sensations you find on your head, face, neck, back, front and shoulders. 
Can you also feel an emotion in your body? 
Next, bring to mind a positive emotion by recalling a pleasant event. 
Then try to locate where in the body you feel it. 
Finally, spend two minutes breathing naturally and come back to the present moment.
⠀⠀
🧘‍♀️Body scanning is valuable as it allows you to focus on your physical sensations much more than in everyday life, and it also relaxes you, which can help you fall asleep fasten, sleep deeper and be more energized throughout the day!

💆‍♂️ Taking breaks could make you feel guilty. However, it’s important to remember that your mind works like a muscle: after sustained use, it becomes fatigued and needs rest time to recover. It’s better to take small breaks that involved movement and pay attention to your surroundings. For instance, after putting a lot of hours into one task, take a 15-minute walk and make a conscious effort to focus on the sounds surrounding you. You will feel the difference.

All these mindfulness practices lead to healthier approaches to your work, increase productivity and reduce stress. However, they are just that: practices. To make them work in your favor, you need to do them constantly and train your mind and body to get used to them. Consistency, just like in everything else, is the most important aspect of the practice.

Next time you go through those papers, reply your emails, attain your meetings, take your daughter to school or visit the doctor, try to be as present as possible and you will start to experience the benefits of mindfulness inside and outside of the workplace.14 days agoDownload
🍱 And really take it. It’s very tentative to skip it, especially when you have a deadline coming over. Sometimes, when you do sit at lunch, you either check your phone while eating or you meet with colleagues to speak about other work-related issues.

Next time, make a conscious decision to enjoy your meal by trying mindful eating. Put the phone down and appreciate the colors, taste and texture of your food. 📚 People usually believe that multitasking is the epitome of efficiency. However, research conducted at Stanford University found that multitasking results in less productivity. In fact, heavy multitaskers were worse at multitasking than those who weren’t. The reason is simple: our brains need to focus on one thing at a time to perform successfully.

To bring this into your favor, set a list of priorities and give your full attention to each item individually or adopt more agile ways to work. If a project is too long, break it down into the smallest feasible time span and commit to focus on just that segment until you finish and go for the next one.14 days agoDownload
💡 Breathing is important, but easy to forget. Our minds are so used to get going and work on autopilot that sometimes we lose track of time until we hit a breakdown. One solution would be turning breathing into a habit by relating common daily tasks with reminders. All of these circumstances have created thoughts that are going through your mind at the same time and increasing your stress level to the fullest. Consequently, you already feel tired and it’s only 9 in the morning on a Tuesday. 🤔 Sounds familiar? Chances are you’ve been working on autopilot for too long and it’s creating a tornado of pressure and despair in your head. The solution, perhaps, is not having everything done at once, but trying to start your work while being mindful. 📖 Results from a study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine showed that, after six months, participants of an online mindfulness program (created for their specific workplace) felt less stressed, more resilient, and more energetic than the group that couldn’t yet take the class.

Oh boy, here it goes. This is real this is me. I have been juggling many emotions this year and I am finally in a space where I feel I can share in hopes to help others reflect on where they are at right now in their lives. In this episode, I share my experience with burnout and finally quitting my job.⠀

For those who have never experienced this or don’t know what burnout is, burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands. As the stress continues, you begin to lose interest and motivation that led you to take on a certain role in the first place.⠀

🧘‍♀️#Yinyoga is an introspective practice that teaches mindfulness. Postures are held for time and performed with little muscular effort. The yin practice embraces both Eastern and Western concepts. From an Eastern perspective, yin poses stimulate the meridian lines and open energetic channels within the body. From a Western perspective, by holding a posture for time we apply moderate stress to the connective tissues (fascia, tendons, and ligaments). A healthy amount of stress hydrates and repairs tissues and can ultimately restore range of motion.

Forgive the past and accept all of yourself for who you are right now in this moment. Our insecurities did not just pop up out of nowhere, we developed them as a result of certain experiences. When we live from a place of insecurity we attract things that re-confirm these thoughts because we don’t believe we deserve better. ⠀⠀
Recognizing and forgiving the past for any insecurity it has created helps you to heal and move forward. We can’t change the past so why live in it? ⠀⠀
Be the best human you can be in this moment right now, that’s all we can do!⠀
The very thing we are protecting ourselves from could be the source of our greatest strength.

No matter where you are at or who you are, you can start to create a whole new version of yourself. Here are 5 steps that I try to consider on a daily basis:

1. Intention - Start with what you intend to do and take it as your first step. Remove the self-serving factor and make this as a service!

2. Your Personal Story - Think about your personal story and use this as your vision. Believe in who you are!

3. Choose Your Battle - Choose an ideology and deal with the most meaningful issues. Fight for what matters!

4. Create a Manifesto - This should be something that you do out of love, passion, strength and your contribution. Let the beauty of what you love be what you do!

5. Facilitate Transformation - Take things further! Never stop to educate yourself, even when you feel that you already know so much. There is NEVER a time where we simply “know enough”. Knowledge is abundant!

For everyone who is currently struggling with any (mental) health issue: Recovery is not for people who NEED it, it’s for people who WANT it. "Nila you will never get completely healthy!" was a sentence that I heard doctors telling me over and over again. But I always somehow knew that it’s possible to recover. Completely! For everyone! But it’s not easy you know. It’s not a “one morning I’ll wake up feeling happy, healthy and confident again!” solution. Its NOT a quick fix. You have to do the hard work. But you have to start with your believe system. ⠀⠀
So I started to change my thoughts. I started to stop thinking about what went wrong in the past and where I was today. Instead, I started to look into the future - at all those things I want to do in this life. I always thought I must somehow "find" myself, but when I realized that I actually have the power to CREATE a whole new me, someone I would be proud of, I slowly started to change from the inside out 🙌🏻 . ⠀⠀
I started to study psychology, nutrition and yoga and implemented them into my daily life. And I’m still on a journey to better myself every day, because I can see the purpose behind all of the dark moments. I can see the connection of all the dots slowly appearing. 
Today I’m absolutely grateful for this journey and I am finally ready to share it with the world. I want to talk about my journey openly, honestly and raw. I’m still educating myself to become an expert in my “3 pillars of recovery” myself! But I now know that my life’s mission is to help others with my work one day & empower in them the believe that healing is possible. Because when I can change, so can YOU! Don’t give up! Because the world needs you. #WeNeedYou

Did you know that passion comes from the Latin word for pain? My passion in these 3 areas came from a deep pain within me 🕊. Who knows where your pain will lead you to.. I just know that my personal Growth has to Look Beyond the ME… to the WE. I take it slowly. One day at the time.

A breath of truth. There will be moments in your life when you don't know what to do. 
Moments when you think you will hear your heart rip apart. 
Moments in which you believe that nothing has a meaning. 
Moments in which you might even believe that there is no sense in you being here. 
I know those moments. 
I have lived through these moments and thoughts almost half my life over and over again. 
I had the feeling somehow not to be right in this world, as if I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. 
I looked everywhere for a home, a place where I would feel safe and secure. 
I've traveled all over the world to find this place and finally just to feel for one day the way I am, I am right now. 
I wanted to hear it, I wanted to see it, I wanted to feel it. Again. ⠀⠀
But it didn't come. 
Until the day I started being honest to myself and allowed myself to find this home within me. 
Just inside me. 
Just like that. 
Without anyone having seen it. 
Without anyone having said it. ⠀⠀
I started letting go, letting go of all the innumerable ideas about who I should be,  what I should do, and gradually I discovered in myself a person who was so full of infinite love and allowed me to share this love - simply because it is my nature. 
Ever since that day of realisation I heal, every day a little bit more. ⠀⠀
Let me tell you this:
There will be moments when you will doubt everything. 
At those moment, remember that the reason why you doubt is that you know deep inside that love is the answer and that the world outside unfortunately only asks the wrong questions. ⠀⠀
Ask yourself what you need today. What food are you craving, which colours do you want to see, what kind of people can make you happy today?
Do this. Just this. And trust me that everything will be ok.
One day at the time.
Today just trust. Let go. Open your heart and experience the magic, that is your life! #trustyourself

🕊The sad truth I learned on my journey is that traditional therapy alone has little effect on lasting change. The conventional model of psychology - which I was ironically introduced to during my studies in Psychology - still encourages talk therapy. But what we know as mental illness is not a disease that we carry as a label for a lifetime. It is a symptom with a clear message to provide mind and body with homeostasis. I strongly believe that every illness has a purpose.
⠀⠀
For me, talking did indeed help in the short-term as it made me realise what "bull shit" was actually going on in my head, but it did not change my life in the long-term. Only scratching on the surface does not heal you from a broken heart. Therapy's aim is to find the "problem" of your thoughts, emotions and behaviour. But there is no "problem" with a one-way-fits-all solution. Knowing "the problem" is not enough to fully recover. You need to develop a vision, a future version of yourself and consider yourself already there (also know as "manifestation" of "future-self journaling").

Usually, no one tells you that you can simply change your thoughts at any time, if you really want to change. As I have said so many times before: "Life is not about finding yourself. It's about CREATING yourself."

Being an introvert is something about myself that I used to judge and see as a weakness. As I learned more about what this means, I also began to realise that not liking these qualities was more to do with the story I’ve been fed by society and what society values (erm...not introvertism!). And I began to see these qualities as gifts and embrace them. •

Growing up, finding peace and unconditional love. This lifeyourney is all about unlearning, detaching, rewriting, forgiving, accepting, letting go and (self)love. A lot that we saw and learned during our childhood is not the reality and it’s not serving us anymore. Recognizing this and all of our patterns and defense mechanismes can be painful. It makes us feel homeless, but afterwards its so rewarding. It creates space so that far better things can enter our heart and be the powerful base of our home. Most of us learned that we aren’t good enough and that we have to do certain things in order to be loved.
